High Mass Black Holes in Soft X-ray Transients

چکیده
1 We suggest that high-mass black holes; i.e., black holes of several solar masses, can be formed in binaries with low-mass main-sequence companions, provided that the hydrogen envelope of the massive star is removed in common envelope evolution which begins only after the massive star has finished He core burning. Our evolution scenario naturally explains the gap (low probability region) in the observed black hole masses.

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

The observations and theory of the exciting new class of galactic black hole X-ray transients is reviewed. Seven of these systems have measured mass functions or mass estimates in excess of stable neutron stars, making them excellent black hole candidates. Two of them have revealed " superluminal " radio jets. Study of the hard and soft radiation from these sources has given tight constraints o...
متن کاملAn Overabundance of Transient X-ray Binaries within 1 Pc of the Galactic Center
During five years of Chandra observations, we have identified seven X-ray transients located within 23 pc of Sgr A. These sources each vary in luminosity by more than a factor of 10, and have peak X-ray luminosities greater than 5 × 10 erg s, which strongly suggests that they are accreting black holes or neutron stars. The peak luminosities of the transients are intermediate between those typic...
متن کاملX-ray spectral transitions of black holes from RXTE All-Sky Monitor
We have analysed X-ray outbursts from several Galactic black hole (GBH) transients, as seen by the All-Sky Monitor (ASM) on board Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). We have used the best estimates of distance and black hole mass to find their luminosity (scaled to the Eddington limit), which allowed for direct comparison of many sources. We have found two distinct hard-to-soft state transition...
متن کاملDIM light on Black Hole X-ray Transients
The current model for the outburst cycles of stellar-mass black holes X-ray binaries is the disk instability model (DIM). An overview of this model and a discussion of its theoretical and observational challenges are given.
